crime guilt punishment

Ferdinand con Schirach is a German criminal lawyer turned writer. The Crime, Guilt, Punishment series (Verbrechen, Schuld, Strafe in the original German)
is a brilliant place to start- it's adapted into a TV show that I'm yet to find. The Collini Case is excellent too- the movie has an english release.
Unfortunately the movie misses out on a key part of the book which is a real shame, but the book was held up in a federal court case as moral evidence.

railsea lock in darkness at noon

Railsea is a whimsical but simultaneously unsettling fantasy story- a lot of the books by the author are similar- China Mieville is an expert in
"strange fantasy." John Scalzi is my go-to reccomendation for science fiction- the Old Man's War series is good, but rather long. Lock-in is one of two books.
Darkness at Noon inspired 1984. It's been my favourite book for a very very long time.
